USA Hockey and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to coach. Registration is done online on a yearly basis. Certification is also required.
All USA Hockey Requirements must be completed before participating in any team activities.
Steps to become a USA Hockey Coach
Step 1
Register as a member of USA Hockey
Cost is $46 plus any affiliate fees if applicable
Coaches are required to renew their USA Hockey number each season. A current USA Hockey number is required to accept Team Staff invitations.

Step 2
Complete the background screening
USA Hockey has selected NCSI to provide its background screening, a company that is the gold standard in the industry.

Step 3
Complete the USA Hockey Safe Sport Training
Required every year and cannot be added to a roster until completed.
Coaches will need to create/log in to their profiles, click the link under the home tab to the coach eLearning site.
The safety of its participants is of paramount importance to USA Hockey. USA Hockey SafeSport is the organization's program related to off-ice safety.
One of the most exciting aspects of the USA Hockey Safe Sport Program is the online training/education that is available to help our members become aware of the information necessary to help prevent abuse from occurring in our sport. We are pleased to announce that all USA Hockey registered coaches, officials, players, employees and volunteers are entitled to take the training at no cost.
The Safe Sport Training and Refresher Training are each valid for twelve (12) months beginning on 4/1/22.
As of January 1, 2018, all relevant individuals who need to be SafeSport trained or are seeking retraining will need to complete the new SafeSport training, which features updated content.
Once you have completed the Core SafeSport Course, there will be a Refresher Course available for individuals who have previously completed the core Safe Sport course and need to retrain. Users completing the SafeSport refresher course will be trained for an additional season. After completing Refresher 3, you will take the Core Training for the next season.
PLEASE NOTE that you will need your own USA Hockey Confirmation Number or Referee Number and your own email address to access the training. You can locate your number OR obtain a number here membership.usahockey.com. If you will not be participating as a player, coach or referee, you can register at no cost under the ice manager/volunteer category to obtain your USA Hockey Confirmation Number.

Step 4
Complete the Foundations of Player Development Pre-requisite
Coaches will need to complete the Foundations of Player Development module before purchasing their age-specific module. Once a coach completes the Foundations of Player Development module there will be a 15-minute window before they can purchase and complete their age-specific module.
Step 5
Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching
Cost is $20 per module and only needs to be completed once per age level.
Must be completed PRIOR to participating in any team activities and cannot be added to a roster until completed.

Step 6
Find, register and attend the required certification clinic
The Cost is $60.
You can only attend one clinic per season and all coaches must enter USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program at the 6U/8U clinic if coaching at the Learn To Play/Learn To Skate/6U/8U classification or Level 1 if they are coaching 10U classification and above.
You can take clinics from June 15th-Dec. 31st each season.
